Welcome to Oilbars! We will explore the variety and glory of using Oilbars on canvas and cradled panels. You will learn the basics of Windsor & Newton’s Oilbars and some of the different techniques you can use.

Making your own painting support is easy! We'll show you how to stretch canvas and customize your painting surface. This demonstration will be an overview of canvas weights, stretcher bar systems, sizing and gessos.

Starting with a pre-painted canvas, Tanta will cut through it so she can weave in found elements from front to back. They will be attached using, wire, wool, screws and glue. The work is colourful, process oriented and intriguing.

Tanta is an artist living and painting in Victoria, BC. She is currently enrolled in the diploma program at the Vancouver Island School of Art and will graduate in 2011. She has been invited to represent Canada as an emerging contemporary artist in the 2011 Biennale in Florence, Italy. Visit www.tantapennington.com to view her work.

Barry demonstrates techniques for portraiture using acrylic on canvas. He will paint a portrait during the demo, sharing his process and style with you. Some of his sitters include Elvis Costello, Silken Laumann and Shakespearean actor and director Neil Freeman.

Barry completed his early training at the East Sydney College of Art, where he studied portraiture at a young age. As a teen in Australia, Barry was taught by one of Australia’s foremost portrait painters, Joshua Smith. Ken will demonstrate how he paints with acrylics on black canvas using white transfer paper to produce mystical, surreal images.

He studied art in Sweden, and at Croydon Art College in England before coming to Canada in 1975 where he spent a year studying art conservation in Ontario. Ken learned to paint, like most, through trial and error. Visit www.kenhornart.com to learn more.
