The Why Not? and What If? Approach to Art Making with Sarah Gee Miller

North Vancouver
Sat, February 3, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Sat, February 3, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Join Sarah Gee Miller for this independent artist's guide to unconventional studio practice, and dispel the myth of artists as "young, talented, and capable of drawing anything they like" while letting go of the idea that one is "too old," "too inexperienced," "not creative /talented enough” to make art.

Many, if not most of artists working today in Vancouver are not tethered to gallery and consumer expectations. Work is developed in solitude, with some never having gone to art school or enjoyed the attention of a mentor - making their way alone.

In this presentation, Sarah will facilitate and motivate through her own experiences as an artist who began later in life, who had no formal education, and has a different way of making what is essentially "traditional" art - that is, making the art as object, as a thing to live with, to contemplate and to enjoy.

Sarah doesn't use many materials in her work beyond paper and art knives, also often working digitally, and using machines and digital automation to create her stunning pieces. She wants to know that this is not only okay, but that you too can do it and it doesn't make you any less of an "artist".

Using actual and digital samples of her work and a slide presentation, she will discuss her motivation for becoming an artist, primary influences, successes and failures, how she got gallery representation, and how she manages to maintain a flourishing practice in an increasingly expensive city that can feel largely hostile or indifferent to art. All incredibly useful in the act of taking your art to a more professional level.

Space is limited and registration is required.
