In this demonstration, Vancouver artist and educator Justin Ogilvie demonstrates how to apply creative approaches to painting the portrait in oils.

His working motto is "Build the form, tear it down, then look for the magic moments while cleaning it up". Emphasis will be placed upon pushing paint and highlighting its abstract properties, as well as confronting the preciousness often associated with realism.

Justin will teach a variety of contemporary techniques (artificial colour, palette knife, squeegee, scraping, textures) will be utilized to disturb the realism of the form making way for new spaces.

Attendees of this demonstration will learn how to let go, take risks, and adapt the rules in portraiture providing new possibilities for their own practice.

Space is limited and registration is required.
Please visit Opus Downtown Vancouver or contact them at 604‑678‑5889 to register.

Justin Ogilvie is a Vancouver based artist and educator, with an MFA from the University of Alberta, and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Ogilvieā€™s painting practice explores the tension between traditional and contemporary modes of painting; specifically, examining how the self is constituted within interpersonal relationships, our declining connection to nature, and today's digital technology.
