Beyond Brush and Canvas with Johnny Taylor

Join Johnny as he explores the many facets of mark making with an array of products.

He will explain how to create form and imagery within abstract oil painting using atypical means and surfaces.

The various tools and products that will be covered are pallet knives, squeegees, chisels, oil sticks and tubes, and cold wax. He will also demonstrate how surfaces such as Mylar, paper and wood will require different approaches when the paint touches these surface and how you as a painter can respond.

This is an excellent demonstration for the aspiring abstract painter who is interested in seeing the broad spectrum of products that can be used to create an abstract painting.

Johnny Taylor (b. 1973) is a contemporary abstract painter. He has been pursuing his current methodology for the past fifteen years. His recent work combines aspects of modern architecture, traditional Chinese painting and Japanese woodblock prints. His foundation was shaped by the study of early Canadian landscape painting, abstract expressionism and blueprint drafting.
Taylor is based in Vancouve r, travelling frequently to Los Angeles and Japan for creative studies. In 2015 he was awarded a residency in the international program at the renowned 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo. Taylor was a merit scholarship candidate at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. Works by the artist are held in collections throughout Nort h America, Europe and Asia.
