MARNEY-ROSE EDGE

After being inspired by a Visiting Artist Demonstration at Opus, Marney-Rose thought about creating books. Cards seemed a less intimidating way to start, and she recently began creating cards for family and friends on special occasions. "The card pictured was for Valentine’s Day. As a watercolourist, it was a natural medium to use to create the card," said Marney-Rose.

She started with a pre-made watercolour card, cutting it into a heart shape and painting a red rose on the outside. A small heart punch was used along the edge to reveal the inside of the card, painted in a matching hue, and with a ribbon to tie it all together.

RUSSELL ALTON / Chop-Logik

Russell is a Vancouver printmaker who proves that conventional methods are not the only ones that can get the job done. Instead of using a silk screen frame, Russell free hands his stencils to print his creative cards, tote bags, and cotton rag prints.

He uses a Liquitex Freestyle Paddle Brush to push the paint through the screen and onto whatever surface he has laid out on his kitchen studio table. He takes advantage of the processes and tools that work well for him in this limited space and they lend themselves beautifully to his inventive characters and designs.

ZAK + LYSA / Fertile Images + Design

"Every art gallery in the world sells thousands & thousands of cards, because that's how everyone can take home an image they love," says Lysa, "so we make hand-made notecards with the Strathmore cards, and we've just published a collection of 60 B+W photographic postcards too. They remind you that many people will frame your cards, and to be sure to give them a great name. Words and images are a powerful combination, and the right name can sell the card."
